The original populist, anti-corporatocracy Libertarian message of the Tea Party has been long lost as it has now become nothing more than the right wing of the Republican Party. The original populist, anti-corporatocracy Liberal message of the Occupy Movement has become lost as well, with Occupy fizzling away altogether. Corporate America using it's favorite tool, the media, was very effective in crushing both movements, dismissing the Tea Party merely as a group of "Grumpy Old White Guys" and Occupy as "The Mad At DAD Crowd". Neither group had a chance at success with the media effectively keeping half the nation opposed to each group. Any similarities in the message were ignored, only the differences were played up so that those who supported the Tea Party hated Occupy and vice versa. Any movement that now arises will be filtered through the media into the basest ideological terms, ensuring that at least half the country will despise it.
Every issue that comes up these days, no matter how innocuous, must become a battle of ideology. This is how Corporate America wants it; divide and conquer. The last thing Corporate America wants is for the Left and the Right to come together over an issue, such as NSA spying. As long as the Left and the Right can be kept battling each other, the real enemy will be constantly growing in power, clamping down on each side while we are preoccupied with petty ideological squabbles. Thomas Paine once wrote, “He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression." I hope we can get back to that mentality.
